Thameslink Programme
The government-sponsored £7Bn Thameslink Programme was a 10-year programme transforming north – south travel through London. The programme included extensive infrastructure enhancements, improved stations such as London Bridge and Blackfriars, 115 new trains, and the use of novel signalling technology with the first Automatic Train Operation (ATO) implemented on a European Train Control System (ETCS) platform. The programme increased capacity on the London section of the Thameslink route delivering trains every 2 – 3 minutes through central London between Blackfriars and St. Pancras International. Elizabeth Line – Crossrail Programme
At its inception the Crossrail programme was the largest infrastructure project in Europe and the largest project in the UK for a generation. The project took over 10 years to complete and an expenditure of over £19Bn. Ten new stations were built across London, and the new tunnelled railway now provides reduced journey times, and seamless journeys from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east. The Elizabeth Line (as it is now known) opened in May 2022, and during its first full year of operation carried 150.7 million passenger journeys with around 600,000 passengers using the line now each day.
